It can be short most people who start out in this "make money online" thing don't treat it like a real business so then they say "where is all the money" Then they realize how much effort is needed and then they quit. Making money online fulltime is possible but most people don't take it seriously..

It depends upon the type of affiliation generally it is short term but this not means at all that it is the kind of short term business.
I actually think it's the opposite - long term because it relies on you building a list, and trust within a niche/community in order to recommend products.
It depends on your strategy. Blogging for example is a long-term strategy whereas Facebook or PPV advertising can be short-term if you have money to burn. But there's still a learning curve with any model.
