Default Is Email Marketing defeated by Social Media Marketing?

Social networks have become an important part of the internet and online marketing landscape in the last decade. Some people think email marketing is declining faced with the rise of social media.

Does it make sense for you to allocate all of your marketing resources to marketing through social networking?

There is no one portal you can use that will get to 100% of people.

I know many people who regularly check their emails but never check Facebook, and vice-versa many people who have abandoned their email accounts.

So the best thing to do is not to abandon any form of communication and be on as many of them as you can at the same time.

No way!

Email marketing is King and will still be around long after social media marketing has bit the dust. It's easy to do, effective and quick. I wouldn't know where to begin with SMM.

I don't look at social media as a replacement... more of an additional resource for me to take advantage of. Two traffic sources are better than one. It's always a good idea to not put all your eggs in one basket, so to speak.

Personally, I prefer email and hate checking Facebook/Twitter/Pinterest/etc. I only do it because I have to. Only way for family to see my daughter and it's great for online marketing. Heck, I only joined Facebook last year!

Hi Sabrina,

First, it's not social vs email. Email was the first social network -- anytime two people interact (regardless of the channel) it's a social interaction. Those who claim email is dying have an agenda to promote other solutions.

If email is dying then why is that you can't sign up for FB or Facebook or any other social network without having an email address? Why is it that FB started their own email service? Why is it that FB and Twitter and all the other networks send out billions of emails each year? Witout email as an aquisition and retention channel, networks such as FB and LinkedIn and others wouldn't even exist. The entire debate about email dying is a red herring and always has been.

Let me know when another channel can return $40 for evey $1 dollar invested in it and then I'll be impressed .

I hope this helps.

Regards,
jim
