It is always a combination of the two. Content without links will find it difficult to rank. But links with poor content also creates a problem.

Content is important to build the links and links are important to get ranking.

Both are important, but everything starts with the content first, then builds from there. It is no use building good back links from web 2.0 sites to really poor content. A while ago marketers used to say how they could get tons of traffic to a single page website just by backlinking. I dare say some can still do this. However, there is not much point driving the most targeted, cash rich traffic to a site that has utter drivel on it.

So get the content side of the equation working first, then start building some good quality back links to it.

Default content rules!

Content is what drives the internet. The links within content help build ranking, but without good content, you won't get far on the internet.

As many leading bloggers and industry pioneers keep on advising for quality + authentic + unique content, I also prefer to have proper justifiable content to promote your website.

Quality content can also be effected badly by poor backlinks. If they are irrelevant and / or low quality then following the recent Peguin update it is likely they will do more harm than goopd in the long run.

All the best.
