What is a landing page in a website?

While reading an article I found that you must have a good landing page to get more customer on your website..
Now, I am confused with this term landing page. Please give a summary on this landing page..

Landing page must be your home page, or any other page in your site. it is the page your website visitors arrive at after clicking on a link. Your goal in having a landing page is specific transactions such as sales, registrations, sign-ups, etc.

In my point of view landing page is the page your website visitors arrive at after clicking on a link...It must be home page...!

Landing page is the page that you visit by clicking a link or an image from other websites. It can be either your home page or any inner page for that matter.
