Think about in terms as you as the "user." Whenever you search for something in a search engine, you tend to scan in the "golden triangle." Ranking in the top of the search engine rankings put you in the golden triangle where users are going to see you the very best. Anything "below the fold" (the place that users have to scroll to in order to see it) doesn't get results remotely close to what the top listings do. Even if you are in the top results, you have to still pull consumers into your listing with descriptions that catch their eye and interest. Higher search results tend to lead to more money.

While, I can appreciate the drone mentality of the masses that might support the 60% theory I don't think it is based in reality. Personally, I think that today's consumer is far more educated and has learned to seek out quailty over whatever shows up first.

Yes. When does anyone pick just the first result unless they are looking for a particular website?

Sometimes i've got to scroll through the top 100 or even 200 to find what I want - and open a few pages in my browser. Top 10 does help but if the website looks like a junk spammy 'me too' website (you know the ones) then nobody is going to touch it with a barge pole!

Because it's free traffic. More traffic equals more money. You should never rely solely on Google but ranking in search engines is extremely important.

Search engine positioning is the lost important, if you are a e-commerce site or if you need leads through your site. If your site is not ranked in top page of search engine then you will hardly get any visitors on your site. Its better that you build some traffic and even work on your keywords to get better ranking.

Search engine traffic and your position on the first two pages is important, but certainly not the be all and end all of traffic. It's free if you don't pay anyone to do your SEO for you or use PPC advertising, which makes it especially good, but there are only a certain number of sites that can get on the first two pages for any given keywords, so you shouldn't rely on it totally.

Only about 15% of viewers get to the bottom of page two and beyond when searching, so you must use other methods to get traffic to your site because there just isn't enough room for many sites to get ranked that highly, and you can spend a huge amount of time struggling to get there.

More people apparently click on natural links than on the paid links as well.

The higher your position on the search engine result page the more clicks you get. That is why the search engine positions so important. It brings more clicks to your business.
