Default What Is Average Response Rate To Email Sendouts

Back in the 80's I used direct mail for sending out promotional brochures to publishers. It was indicated that when I send out 1000, or 2000 or more promotional peices I should expect about a 2% response rate. I''ve never been told what the average response rate should be for email.....is this even important? Or should there be SOME percentage to expect? Curious.....

For email marketing, normally we won't expect for any response. I mean, will you reply to a newsletter/email that is obviously for business promotion purpose? But we do concern about open rates & conversion rate. You can use parameters to track your emails' performance. Often, for an opt-in house list, your open rate should be approximately 20%.

Hi Cartoonist,

The conversion rate averages between 2% - 5% for most campaigns. Of course just looking at conversion rates alone this way can be misleading. This is one factor (as I'm sure you know) in calculating ROI. It's worth mentioning that the ROI on email marketing is about $38 for every $1 you invest.

Regards,
jim

This is where testing and tracking play a large roll. You need to set up tracking to see how many people open your emails, as well as how many people buy from those mails.

Also if you want to keep more people on your list and have them as repeat buyers then you should take a look at this article.

Based on my own experience - form 0 to 10%. It depends on a quality of the list, the advert and how many of your ads reach recipients inbox folders. For instance, with Neo E-Mail Marketing (Opt In Mailing To Quality E-Mail Recipients) or Adland Pro Newsletter you can assume delivery (not opening!) rate near 90%.

With GetResponse you have a deliverability rating of 99% - (scored by Return Path) something we are understandably proud of.

Obviously that's important becauuse people can't open your email if they don't even get it.

jim

It's going to vary so much based on industry and product it's difficult to get an accurate count. For example, for a hobby site with a low priced product I have seen 5%. For a financial product it was close to 0.

Like Ken said above though, tracking metrics and testing is key.

Track all these data points in your sales funnel:

Deliverability rate (Our company, MailMonitorApp.com, tracks this by provider and email campaign. Having a good email marketing tool helps, but they rarely track actual deliverability rates for your campaign)
V
Open rate (Any decent email marketing service does this. )
V
Click-through rate (Any solid email marketing service does this.)
V
Site Conversion rate (Google Analytics does this)

Look for leaks and focus on those areas

Depending on your business model, getting people to spend/donate/deposit their money is likely what it's all about. Direct Mail (DM) is Database driven. As such it is a huge revenue driver. It's one of the few marketing disciplines that can say "Give me a dollar, I'll give you back a buck fifty.

When you say responce rate this could mean either the number of opens you have from a broadcast, or the number of sales from a promotion, with the latter being a much smaller percentage.

I have a weekly e-letter and the open rate is usually 25% - 30%. A subscriber only gets the first paragraph or so in the email and has to click on a link that reads continue reading which leads them to the full post on my blog. About 10% -15% click this link. You will then be looking for 2% of those to buy if there is a promotion. However, there are many factors that could alter results dramatically, like how often you contact your list, how often you promote to your list, how the list was built, type of subscribers on the list, ie are they previous buyers or after free information

Default Open Rate

I usually average between 1-2% but depends on what your offering and who you are marketing too. I have heard of 5% but that is the ceiling
