The way you contact a customer or subscriber must come down to your type of business, budget and what you are looking to achieve. Direct mail can still work for certain industries, and some direct mail campaigns have been shown to be more effective at making a direct sale than many email campaigns. It is easier to delete an email without reading it than it is to discard an actual letter in the post, assuming you do not make the envelope obvious that it is a direct sales attempt. Keep envelopes plain white.
On the downside, physical mail is far more costly than email. A low cost broadcast service like Aweber, or even a free one like Mailchimp can not only deliver your email messages to your list but also act as a basic store for your database too.
There is nothing actually stopping you from doing both. Email all your subscribers and just use direct mail for customers who have purchased something from you.
