Your website needs to have fresh updated content on it every week so the bots have a reason to come back, and at the same time building quality links back to your site will help. The primary thing is you have to have a patience for the results to appear.

Both are just as important as each other. You must add content that is original, and of a high quality that can be helpful to the reader. The search engines want to find content that is useful to searchers. Links that point to your website are also a way for Google to assess whether people like your content. Plus you have the bonus of direct traffic from the links.

If you have good content, the backlinks will come naturally.

In my opinion good content will attract more readers. Good contents also allows you add good keywords, means more visitors. Backlinks are good to refer people to a site but you are not sure if those people where really interested on your article or if the title of the backlink attracted them for a moment.
