Article Marketing Down The Pan

Is article marketing going down the pan due to search engine algorithm updates recently made by Google?

One article directory site I know of (submityourarticle.com) recently went from over 510,000 pages indexed down to 174,000 pages.

This is something specifically that Google is targetting which relates to article directories, the owner of ezinearticles.com states that he has lost 35% of his traffic in one day, and 11.5% in another.

Duplicate content is one part of the issue, but from what I gather with ehow.com not loosing rankings, outgoing links (follow) seem to be a factor.

Hey Dave..
I can see by the comments that some members are not on top of the situation...

Article marketing will require more writing skill to return results.
The standards imposed by the directories will have to become more strict.
For those of us that can actually produce original content...there should be no serious problem...

The taboo subjects will fall to the bottom and the legitimate content will return to the top.

The content scrapers have crashed....the playing field will become more favorable for solid information......duplicate and stolen content will vanish from Google...
It is about time....
That has been in the works for several years....if we read between the lines......some saw that coming...LSI was a good example....

Ya doing article submissions are actually going down the line as one of the best article directories like ezinearticles.com is reducing traffic like anything.

Yes, it is affected because mostly articles are copy paste i.e. one article posted on several article sites.

But I would say that, it is because these articles are posted at multiple places that users are able to easily find the information they need.

for school/university/official projects so many times we need reference to such a pool of information. So these should be considered important.

There is a difference between citation (taking sources from all over the web and showing snippets of this information linked back to the source) and scraping (copying content with no regard to the original source)

A lot of spammers scrape content and post it here (on this forum) with links back to their website for example, but a wikipedia article is totally different in that it doesn't link to anywhere externally without a nofollow href.

Article marketing still works.. but now I think that google wants to have quality content... No more of this 250 word article just to get backlinks to your site. Quality content at least a 400 word article.. Google wants a good expierence for the user whever there searching for to solve their problems..

Duplicate content at best is citation like a resource that links to other sites such as techmeme.com or digg.com - at worse used to spam by including links to unrelated content.
