Having worked as an email delivery consultant monitoring about two million messages a month, I can tell you for sure that it is not a good idea to use a rented or purchased list to send out your email marketing messages.
Companies that sell or rent out "opt-in" lists are offering you lists that opted-in for "their" services not yours. Remember that it is not your list, it is theirs. Many times my clients wonder why their emails are going to the spam folders. That's because when your receivers start hitting the spam buttons (since they did not opt to receive your messages), your company name and URL get blacklisted and ISPs won't tell you anything about it because it is all confidential.
It becomes a little difficult or rather really difficult to then deliver your messages to Inboxes vs. spam folders. This is just a brief explanation.
